In general, one of the most persistent myths about shaving that sticks around is probably "never shave against the grain". If you have sensitive skin, shaving against the grain can certainly result in irritation, especially if you use multi-blade razors that create a lot of friction, but at the same time, it is difficult to get that really close shave by only shaving with the grain. The result may instead be that you still get irritated skin because you then take more and stress the skin in your attempts to get as clean a shave as possible. The basic rule is to also take a pass against the grain if possible. If you use a classic safety razor and proper accessories such as shaving cream or shaving soap, shaving against the grain should not only be safe for the skin but even necessary for ultimate results! Eco Clean Face Canola works great as a shaving cream and also works on sensitive skin.
"If I have a beard, I don't have to shave or groom" is another common misconception. Many people think that growing a beard means you can skip shaving and facial care. But as long as you don't consciously strive for a wild look, you will soon realize that even a beard requires some care if it is to look good. You probably still have to shave your neck and if you have hair high up on your cheeks, you should also shave to create some neat lines. And of course, a beard also needs to be trimmed from time to time with scissors or a trimmer. Regular use of beard oil together with a brush is our strong recommendation. Pure Jojoba Oil works on all skin types, but if you are sensitive and easily get red rashes or problems with fungus or dandruff in your beard, Lingonberry Clear Skin is something you should try.
It would be nice if the myth that "shaving makes your beard grow better" were true, but unfortunately neither shaving nor waxing makes your beard grow faster. The coarseness of your beard hairs does not increase just because you shave more often. However, beard hairs do become a little coarser as we get older, but that has nothing to do with shaving. So there are no shortcuts with the razor.
