Opinions whiz through the air and I can't hear my own thoughts. It's a challenge to perform, deliver, be productive and creative, social, and keep track of your own opinions and values in the midst of it all. I've found myself increasingly seeking out Silence, which has become a rare luxury.
Because it is there when I only hear the sounds of nature that I get a hold of myself. Thoughts are allowed to come and go as they please and a welcome desire to create intrudes. Many people fear silence and experience it as loneliness or as a threat. But when you choose it yourself, it is only for the good. Are you one of those who are frightened? Then I would like to encourage you to carefully approach silence, small moments at a time. To explore new spaces within you and hear what your inner self has to tell you. Silence has actually been shown to be good for health, many researchers today agree. The absence of sound can contribute to:
- lower blood pressure
- stimulate the body's immune system
- form new brain cells: two hours of silence leads to the formation of new cells in the hippocampus, the area of the brain linked to learning, memory and emotions
- reduce cortisol and adrenaline levels (stress hormones)
- promote good hormone regulation
- gives energy
- become more creative
- become more solution-oriented
Two minutes of silence has been shown to be even more relaxing than listening to music.
It's as if your thoughts gain height and breadth, you become clearer to yourself and at the same time less self-conscious. I feel that I am all my ages and experiences at the same time, not just the Lisen that I am expected to be in a social context. Simply free. It becomes easier to stay intact when everyday life gets tough.
How do you find silence in a stressful everyday life? These are some of my tricks:
- Limit time on social media. Believe me, the world is not ending and if I miss something, it is nothing vital, not more important than that I have time to think long thoughts!
- Turn off the sound on your mobile phone in the evenings and on weekends, for example, or when you are doing something that requires concentration and presence.
- Go out into nature. Preferably away from the noise of the city. No headphones and your phone turned off.
- Stay in bed for an extra five minutes in the morning. Wake up slowly, let your thoughts come and go, listen into the day.
The reward is that you become calmer, more creative, get to know yourself even better, can clear away thoughts that are not helpful, become better at listening to others and, not least, have a healthier brain!
"A relaxed mind is a creative mind".
